Chapter 1:

For a contributing citizen to be released from the community was a final decision, a terrible punishment, an overwhelming statement of failure. (p. 4)

Reaction: That is sad! I reacted with OMG!. It was like saying, you didn't pass the year so if you're in 8th Grade, you have to repeat it. It was a harsh punishment which would make citizens behave. It would show, you're not trying your best or something like that. I know I wouldn't like to get released. So sad =[
(Now I know that being released isn't a bad thing, but I don't fully regret what I wrote)

Chapter 2:

"But to be honest, Jonas," his father said, "for me there was not the element of suspense that there is with your Ceremony. Because I was already fairly certain of what my Assignment was to be."

Reaction: I was kinds working for Jonas because I wasn't sure because let's say he doesn't know what he plans to hey chosen. I hope he gets chosen to be something not bad like being a Labrador and jobs like that. Hope be becomes something like a chief elder or maybe The Director of Recreation. When I first read the quote I was like hope he gets chosen to be something good.

Chapter 3:

The apple had changed. Just for an instant. It had changed in mid-air, he remembered. Then it was in his hand, and he looked at it carefully, but it was the same apple. Unchanged. The same size and shape: a perfect sphere. The same nondescript shade. (p. 2)

Reaction: I was confused because the apple had changed?????? Its seems crazy but something has to explain what Jonas saw. I think that maybe he saw something else like an illusion or maybe it was just dejavu. Still Ithink that that will happen later in the book. Its just doesn't make sense.

Chapter 4 :

What happens when they make the actual release? Where exactly did Roberto go? (p. 32)

Reaction: That is kinda curious. What really happens? What Larissa wants to know is, where is Roberto? He had to go somewhere but where is that somewhere? It's very curious to me. To me, it doesn't really matter were Roberto is at the moment, but what actually happens when they actually release someone from the community . Is it a bad thing or not. Mysterious................

Chapter 5:

You're ready for the pills, that's all. That's the treatment for stirrings.

Reaction: So in this community you don't feel all those feelings you feel all the sexual feelings and the love. It was creepy how you just take those pills and you feel nothing and all the "stirrings." When I first read the quote I reacted by saying okay I get what happens but what are stirrings? Then I learned that of was some "feelings" and they wanted to avoid it. One of the major rules was people can't see each other naked. So yeah. Its a little disturing when you go into detail.

Chapter 6:

Those who were released were sent Elsewhere and never returned to the community. (p. 41)

Reaction: I was still wondering what does it mean to release to Elsewhere. Is it a good thing or is it bad and that makes me wonder. I was in question when reading the quote. I am wondering...................

Chapter 7:

He couldn't seem to stop, though for each lapse the discipline wand came again, escalating to a series of painful lashes that left marks on Asher's legs. Eventually, for a period of time, Asher stopped talking altogether, when he was a Three.

Reaction: Wow that is horrible. They "whip" you if you don't talk right and that was a big problom with Asher because he always talked too fast and he mixed up words like snack and smack. I know they ment no harm but imagine what they do when they release you..........................

Chapter 8:

Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory (p. 57)

Reaction: Wow. Congradulations for Jonas & all but whats a Reciever. When I read this quote I didnt know what a reciver did or what it actually was. I was wonderfing and curiosity was killing the cat so I decided to continue to read on and on till I knew what a reciver. A reciver is a person which consumed all of the community's memories. In the community, there is no pain, no sadness, no horror. The community is supossed to be "perfect". They have blocked out all of the memories which changed how people see things. I was suprised, nervous and mad which was strange. Can't expalin it.

Chapter 9:

"What happened to her?"he asked nervously.
But his parents looked blank. "We don't know."

Reaction: No Way! Was the community ashamed because of what that reciever did? I found that pretty harsh. They must of really been dissapointed. It makes me wonder, why would they do this? It seems where they are doesn't really care how people feel but their actions do. When I saw the quote I went like this must be a joke but it isn't. Wow. Hope Jonas isn't a failure.

Chapter 10:

I thought there was only us. I thought there was only now. (p. 74)

Reaction: This got me into the book into more. I was very curious because Jonas was right, he thought that it had always been like how the community is right now. When Jonas pursuted the memories from the Giver, he began to notice that

Chapter 11:

"Why don't we have snow, and sleds, and hills?"

Reaction: I mean how could the snow or something like that affect how "perfect" the community is. I'm not saying is completely perfect but what I am trying to say is that, snow, climate control, id the community like inside a green house or something like that. I was liked actually angry and sad when I read the quote. It made me angry that people were feeling artifical nature and it made me sad because they'll never be able to feel the real nature. The community is like a fantasy place where nothing is real but what they see. They will never see beyond the community unless they apply to get released which is like impossible. It makes me wonder how Jonas must feel, he now knows that all he has ever known is just like a flower. You see the flower but all you know is what you see because you can't go find out that flowering plants are heterosporangiate, producing two types of reproductive spores.

Chapter 12:

"We shouldn't have!" Jonas said fiercely (p. 91)

Reaction: Jonas must be devistated because the community is supposed to be blocking all ''the bad stuff from the world''. Well they must do it for a reason not to hurt you but to help you. Well if you continue reading, you begin to notice that some stuff they do is actually cruel. When I read the quote, I agreed with Jonas. I know I wouldn't like to live in that society. I would miss Amoy of stuff like love, my real parents, my pets and all. At the end, I do agree with Jonas.

Chapter 13:

"We really have to protect people from wrong choices."

Reaction: It made me querry on how people will make the wrong choices. I think the whole point on how they live is so that the community won't turn into a life of crime. If the citizens can make their own choices, well, they might make the wrong ones just as stated in the quote. That's the point on why its set up like that. It made me think that even the littlest choice might cause a bigger choice until it turns very ugly. Its just strange how the citizens behave and how it doesnt' have alot of trouble. I know their whole life they're behaving, but still, it doens't hurt to think outside the box.

Chapter 14:
"They selected me and you to lift that burden from themselves." (p. 107)

Reaction: Well since I don't have my book I don't understand the quote that much but I think its supposed to mean that they were selected to help the community and they're the only ones that can make a difference. If that what it means I think I would react with that I would be happy because they'll make a difference. It would help eliminate the cruelness that the community has stored that nobody knows except the Giver and Jonas.

Chapter 15:

The Giver looked away, as if he could not bear to see what he had done to Jonas. "Forgive me, " he said.

Reaction: I found this kinds awkward because maybe Jonas didn't find it that horrible and threatning. Maybe Jonas will learn from that experience because he saw that people were dying and as stated in the next chapter he helps a boy. He probably may have felt some of the Giver's pain but it all ends up being great. At first when I read the quote I was saying to myself that oh my I'm steal all of ur cookies. What was the horrible pain that the Giver felt. I got interested and continued to read all the way till I knew what I needed to know. As it turns out, this book is getting very interesting when at first I was going What is this book talking about but now I'm very into, this book is good. I want to do tinie reading it and I am like a few chapters toward. Awsome!!!

Chapter 16:

"And they won't be part of my life anymore. . . And they'll be well cared for and respected." (p. 118)

Reeaction: I found this sad yet nice. Its sad because you don't get to see the old and also it nice because they get to maybe live longer because they will be very well cared and respected and all. I was actually sad just like I had said because they won't see the old. I was reading and kept reading and I began to feel sad. Its nice that they will be very well taken care of and that they wont die of pain.

Chapter 17:
"Then I wave bye-bye," he said, in the special sweet voice he used when he spoke to the newchild.

Reaction: I didn't really get it. So Jonas hasn't been taking his pills so I was actually supeised and it kinds made me giggle what Gabriel called himself. I was confused about the game and Asher getting mad at Jonas. It makes me think is this realated to what memory because it something about war and the game is cruel something like that. I think Jonas is beggining to get the feeling of what he was thinking of Fiona. I don't fully understand what is going on but I am getting very curious. Very interesting..................

Chapter 18-19:
No quotes. Just free write your reaction to chapter 19 for 5 minutes and include that with your journal.

Free: I was very interested with this chapter. When I read chapter 19, it left me with so many unanswered questions which get to be answer chapter 20. I had questions who is this mysterious Rosemary? I know she was a reciever, but was she like Jonas sister or like the the Givers sister. It got me all interested so I kept reading on and found the truth and was shocked. I really thought that it was Jonas's sister but never thought it would be the Giver's daughter. Wow! 0_o this was some mysterious chapter.

Chapter 20:

"Her name was Rosemary."

Reaction: OMG! I would of never guessed that Rosemary was the Givers daughter. I was shocked when I read the quote. I was sad because she got released and to be released is that you get a shot and you die. I was sad yet all my questions got answered from the previous chapter. So sad :'[

Chapter 21:

"First thing tomorrow morning."

Reaction: Jonas is going to escape but where to? Its elsewhere but where is elsewhere? Also will it work as expected? Well it doesnt go exsctly as expected but but he does escape. Hope he survives.

Chapters 22-23
No quotes. Just write how you think the book ended. Did they make it alive to a new community, or did they die? Provide support for your opinion. Use evidence from the text. If you're not sure, give evidence for both sides.

Answer: Well my ending is that he dies. I think Gabriel dies first because it says that Gabriels eyes were closed and that they saw lights and they were surrounded by snow which is the color white and so the elsewhere is heaven. That's my ending.
